Shanghai visa-free: is it 144 hours or 240 hours now? (2026 rules)
Searching the old "144-hour visa-free Shanghai" rule? It was upgraded to 240 hours (10 days) — here's what that means at Pudong and Hongqiao, and what you can see in either window.
If your search landed on the phrase “144-hour visa-free Shanghai” — the rule you’re looking at reading is now bigger. In late 2024 China upgraded the regional 144-hour transit policy to a full 240 hours (10 days), and folded it into the national scheme that this year covers 57 nationalities through 65 ports. The 144-hour version no longer exists as a separate product; every old “144h” itinerary just gets a bigger budget of time.
What applies at Shanghai’s ports
- Eligible passport (57 countries incl. most of Europe, UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea) + confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region (Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan all count; returning to your origin does not).
- Enter via Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao, or the rail port — declare 240-hour transit at the counter, get the entry stamp for the permitted area.
- Permitted area from Shanghai: Shanghai municipality plus Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing are all in-bounds — a highway-train triangle, not just a city pass.
240 hours vs the old 144, practically
| Old 144h | Now | |
|---|---|---|
| Clock | 6 days | 10 days, counted from 00:00 the day after entry |
| Area around Shanghai | Same 3 provinces | Same 3 provinces |
| What fits | City + one day trip | City + Suzhou + Hangzhou, with sleep |
What a 10-day Shanghai-anchored trip looks like
- Days 1–2 — the Bund at opening, Yu Garden, French Concession on foot.
- Days 3–4 — Suzhou gardens, high-speed rail in ~25 minutes.
- Days 5–7 — Hangzhou’s tea fields, back by West Lake at dusk.
- Days 8–10 — Shanghai’s modern half: Lujiazui, night food streets, shopping-forwarder pickup if you’re hauling.
The single most common denial reason at PVG is a return ticket to the origin country instead of an onward ticket to a third destination. Check that before check-in, not at the counter.
